What this site records
This is a static site about paperback books. There are no forms and no accounts, comments, newsletters, or shopping carts.
Optional measurement
With your permission, this site uses Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel to measure page visits and clicks from this site to Amazon. Neither measurement tag loads, and no measurement events are sent, until you press Accept.
If you accept, we ask the services to record:
- that a page on this site was visited and which page variant was shown;
- when an Amazon button was clicked and which edition it represented;
- when the daily puzzle was opened, started, checked, completed, revealed, reset or shared — with the puzzle’s date, its difficulty, which numbered check it was, whether that check passed, and whether a result was shared through your device’s share sheet or copied to the clipboard;
- when you pressed Fill obvious Xs, and how many crosses it filled in — a count only, never which cells they were;
- an allowlisted advertising-creative label when one is present in the arrival link; and
- the browser, device, referral, cookie, and identifier information those services ordinarily collect.
The puzzle events carry no puzzle content. The clues, your marks, the solution and which cells you got wrong are never sent anywhere. The measurement code accepts a fixed list of event names and a fixed list of parameters and silently drops anything else, so this is a property of how the site is built rather than a promise about how it is used.
We do not ask either service to collect your name or email address. We also deny Google advertising storage, ad-user-data, and ad-personalization consent. Google Analytics and Meta nevertheless operate their own technology under their own policies.
What we use it for
We use aggregate measurement to understand whether readers reach the site, which landing-page concepts work, and whether visitors continue to the book on Amazon. Meta receives its events for advertising measurement. Google Analytics receives its events for site analysis.
What these tools cannot see
When you click through to Amazon, you leave this site. Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel installed here cannot see your Amazon account, basket, or purchase. Amazon Attribution links may separately report campaign-level detail-page visits and purchases, but they do not identify the purchaser to us.
Your choice
If you press Decline, neither Google Analytics nor the Meta Pixel is loaded. To change your choice, use Cookie choice in the site footer. That clears the saved choice and displays the notice again.
The choice is stored in your browser’s localStorage under fl-consent-v2 as only accepted or declined. The earlier Meta-only consent key is discarded because it did not cover Google Analytics. Clearing this site’s browser storage also resets the choice.
The daily puzzle
The daily puzzle needs no account or puzzle server. Your marks on the grid, how many times you pressed Check, whether you solved or revealed a case, and your daily streak are written to your browser’s localStorage under keys beginning fl-daily-. They stay on this device, in this browser.
That means there is no backup and no synchronisation. A different browser, a different device, or clearing this site’s storage starts you over, and we cannot restore any of it because we never had it. While a puzzle is still unsolved, Reset clears the marks for that one puzzle and leaves your other puzzles and your streak alone. A solved or revealed attempt is final.
None of this depends on your measurement choice. Pressing Decline stops Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel from loading; the puzzle still saves your progress locally, because that saving never involves anyone else.
Sharing a result uses your device’s own share sheet where one exists, and otherwise copies the text to your clipboard. The shared text names the puzzle number, the date, whether it was solved or revealed, how many checks it took, and the puzzle’s link. It contains no part of the answer.
Amazon links
Amazon is the retailer and has its own privacy practices. Approved Amazon Attribution destinations may report campaign-level visits and purchases. A URL parameter may select only a preapproved static Amazon destination; it cannot supply or construct an outbound URL.
Changes
If this site’s measurement changes, this page and the consent version will be updated before the new measurement is enabled.
